May 21, 2026 Legal Finance: What does Nonlawyer Capital Mean for Clients, Counsel and Courts?
- Legal finance is a rapidly evolving and expanding feature of the legal and business landscape. The arrival of non-lawyer capital as a source of litigation funding, legal-asset management and law firm economics is a nearly daily feature of discussion and charged debate over access to justice, lawyer ethics, disclosure and “social inflation.” Our panelists will explain the basics of the field, address common misunderstandings of its structure and operations, review legal and policy issues it raises, and discuss the role legal finance may play in the legal profession and the business of law going forward.
Stephen Yeazell is the David G. and Dallas P. Price Distinguished Professor of Law Emeritus at UCLA. He writes on civil procedure, broadly speaking, including litigation finance.
Peter Zeughauser is the Chair and founder of Zeughauser Group, an international legal consultancy, serving as a trusted advisor to the leadership of Global 100 and other leading law firms on growth, management, combinations and go-to-market strategies. Peter previously, he was the Senior Vice President and General Counsel of The Irvine Company in Newport Beach, CA for over a decade.
Andy Lundberg, a former Chancery president, practiced at Latham & Watkins in Los Angeles for 35 years, chairing the office’s litigation department and its global insurance recovery practice. In 2018, he joined the investment committee of Burford Capital (NYSE: BUR), the world’s leading legal finance firm.
